Front End Description
We created a sister site for this a few months ago (Poets & Quants and used that as a basis for this new site.
Back End Description
We used a number of WordPress built-in functions to manage navigation, etc and also have a number of custom sidebar widgets, backend admin to control homepage content, and a custom ad manager.

his was a great site to work on and was mentioned in BusinessWeek as well as the Wall Street Journal blogs within a few days of it's go live date.
